Volunteers must be 18 years old or older. High school students are invited to apply for our Teen BMA program. Please note, the Birmingham Museum of Art is unable to accept volunteers for court-ordered community service or any other community service requirement that is a result of a disciplinary infraction.
Information Desk Volunteers
Volunteers at the Information Desk ensure a great experience for visitors at the BMA. They greet visitors, direct them within the Museum, and provide general information. Volunteers must have excellent customer service skills. Shifts are 10am-1pm and 1-4pm on Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1-4pm on Sundays. Information Desk volunteers sign up for at least one shift per month. Sign up today by filling out a Volunteer Application Form.
Community Engagement Volunteers
BMA volunteers will represent the Museum at various community events. Duties will include preparing art supplies, loading supplies at the Museum and transporting to events, facilitating art activities, providing information about museum programs and exhibitions, managing assistant volunteers, packing up and returning art supplies to the Museum. Volunteers must have strong communication skills, be highly organized, comfortable leading art activities, able to lift 25lbs, and have a valid driver’s license and transportation to offsite events. Special Event Volunteers
Assist with ticketing, art activities, coat check, and other duties during special events like Art After Five, Art on the Rocks, Special Exhibition openings, Family Festivals, etc. Special events are often on weeknights and weekends. Shifts range from 2-4 hours depending on the events. Special skills and requirements: Comfortable helping visitors with easy art activities, Excellent customer service skills, Friendly demeanor, Strong communication skills. Museum Store Volunteers
Volunteers in the Museum Store assist staff with greeting and helping customers, as well pricing and displaying items. Volunteers must have excellent customer service skills. Shifts are 11am-2pm on Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1-4pm on Sundays. Museum Store volunteers sign up for at least one shift per month. Sign up today by filling out a Volunteer Application Form.
Teen BMA provides art-minded teens with exclusive access to Museum staff and operations, opportunities to learn from professional artists, and hands-on volunteer experience. Click here for more information and to apply for the Teen BMA program.
Docents are volunteer tour guides. They share their deep passion for art, culture, and learning to help all Museum visitors connect with objects and experience the magic of art. Applications to become apply to become a docent will be posted on February 4, 2019.
