A Masterpiece in Our Midst: Duncanson’s A Dream of Italy

The Birmingham Museum of Art recently announced the purchase of A Dream of Italy (1865), a major painting by Robert S. Duncanson (1821-1872), one of the most significant African-American artists of the nineteenth century. This intimate exhibition will provide an in-depth examination of this masterpiece, as well as a discussion of Duncanson’s life, work, and discourse with other artists of his day. An additional loan for the exhibition has been generously provided by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia.
