The Sculpture Garden at the BMA is lovely on its own, so when a couple decides to celebrate their love in this romantic outdoor space, its beauty serves as the perfect backdrop. Birmingham wedding and portrait photographer Mary Margaret Smith perfectly captured such a scene at one of the weddings held at the Museum. In this BMA Wedding Spotlight, she shares her favorite spots to shoot at the BMA, why she enjoys wedding photography, and more. Keep reading to learn more about Mary Margaret’s experience at the BMA!
Birmingham Museum of Art: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Mary Margaret Smith: My favorite thing about shooting weddings is capturing the connections between people who are gathered together for such joyful occasions. I love being around families and documenting significant moments, both big and small.
BMA: How does a wedding venue influence your photos?
MMS: As with many other aspects of a wedding, the venue helps create an atmosphere that adds to the overall feeling of the day. When a venue feels welcoming, guests can relax and really enjoy their time, which I love capturing! Also, it’s always nice to have plenty of natural light to work with. A venue with big windows and pretty outdoor spaces is a winner in my book!
BMA: How many times have you photographed a wedding at the BMA?
MMS: I’ve had the pleasure of shooting two of my favorite weddings at the Museum! I’ve photographed a lovely spring ceremony in the courtyard and a cozy winter reception inside.
BMA: What would you say makes the Museum a unique wedding space?
MMS: The Museum is a communal and welcoming place in and of itself, which makes it especially inviting for weddings. You can feel the history and character established with all of its amazing artwork. One of my favorite things was seeing guests exploring the galleries! I also love that the BMA can go a variety of directions with atmosphere, given its white walls. You can keep it bright if you want, but it’s also beautiful when the lights are dimmed at night.
BMA: What is your favorite spot at the Museum to photograph for wedding sessions?
MMS: The courtyard is gorgeous for a wedding, and I also love taking portraits around the waterfall area outside. There’s a really nice variety of backdrops. It’s an all-around unique and beautiful place!
