PriceFree
February 18, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for a weekend exploring the wonder and importance of ceramic art in our state and in the collection of the Birmingham Museum of Art. The Bunting Biennial Ceramics Weekend features an evening talk by renowned Alabama-based ceramicist, Larry Allen, followed by a maker day for the whole family that includes creative hands-on activities and tours.

We are kicking off the weekend with an Artist Talk by Larry Allen, a ceramic artist from Leeds, Alabama. Allen hand-crafts each one of his delicately-carved, wheel-thrown stoneware pieces from black stoneware clay and finishes them with multiple glazings and firings. The inspiration for his designs comes largely from African and Native American art. Learn more about the artist from this 2019 profile by The Birmingham Times

About Larry Allen

Larry Allen has worked as a ceramic artist for the past 35 years, honing his wheel-throwing and glazing techniques, all the while ceaseless in his enthusiasm for stoneware and the infinite possibilities of his craft. Allen was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, receiving a BA in Art from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky in May 1978. Larry has an art studio in Leeds, Alabama where he resides. Each piece of Allen’s stoneware is hand-crafted and is largely inspired by African and Native American art. Each vessel is made from a special black stoneware clay with multiple glazings and firings. Most of his work involves delicately carving designs into the surface of a wheel-thrown vessel.

The Bunting Biennial Ceramics Weekend is supported by the generosity of the Bunting Family.
