Studio School // 2017

Studio School offers a wide range of hands-on artmaking classes for adults and children including sculpture, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, crafts, and more. Take time to explore your own creativity while learning techniques and developing artistic skills. Whether you are interested in crafting with friends during a two-hour class or if you want to take an in-depth semester-long course, Studio School has the right option for you.

Be inspired by artwork and artistic practices found in the Museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection. Learn about similar processes and techniques from professional teaching artists. Create your own work of art while receiving feedback and guidance throughout your artmaking process. Each class will provide foundational information while being open-ended to allow you to create your own art.

No prior experience is necessary. All materials are provided and are included in the registration fee. Pre-registration is required at least 48 hours in advance for all classes except for Drop-in free artmaking sessions. Members receive a 20% discount on all Studio School classes.


Fall 2017 class schedule and registration will be posted the end of July!

Fall classes for adults will include Craft Tuesday, Introduction to Drawing, Printmaking, Functional Ceramics, Wood-Carved Figurines, Hand-Made Mosaics, Casting Ceramic Forms, Found Material Collage Paintings, and Drop-in Drawing free sessions. Some classes will start in September and other classes will start in October, November and December. All classes will end by the second week in December.

We will also have 4 different series of Material Exploration classes for 1-5 grade students. Each series includes two classes and a new series starts each month, September through December. Sign up for one series or all 4 since we will be exploring different artmaking processes each series!

Winter / Spring 2017 Classes

CRAFT TUESDAY

Explore different materials and craft your own work of art while enjoying a craft beer or beverage. Learn a variety of fine craft techniques in an inviting and creative environment. Each registration includes two complimentary beverages. Ages 21 and up.

Register Tuesday · April 25 · 5:30-7:30pm // $25

Make your own ceramic hanging planters! Learn how to create a variety of different planter forms using clay. Paint your planters with underglaze if you would like. Then select string and beads from an assortment of options to complete your hanging planters. The clay forms must be fired in our kiln, so the fired pieces may be picked up the following week.


MATERIAL EXPLORATION, 1-5 GRADE

Enhance your child’s creativity through an exploration of art materials and creative techniques. Develop fine motor skills and learn about different cultures and art making processes while having fun creating art! Each session will each have different art projects.

INTRODUCTION TO SCULPTURE 

In this introductory course, we will focus on figurative modeling and sculptural techniques using clay. We will discuss how various artists have handled sculpting the human form. Learn how to make an armature and use an additive process to create a ceramic bust. We will learn foundational techniques and processes that can be used and altered to express your point of view through your own figurative work.

6-12 GRADE // Tuesdays · 4-5:30pm // May 9, 16, 23, & 30 // $60

INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS

In this course, we will explore form, surface, and structure to create functional objects and sculptures in clay. We will focus on developing a strong foundation in the fundamentals of hand-building techniques and how to properly handle and manipulate clay at different stages. You will learn how to enhance your work with a variety of finishing techniques including glazes and surface treatments.

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING

Learn the foundations of drawing as we explore classic and contemporary techniques for drawing the world around us and within us. Learn and develop foundational drawing techniques.
