The Birmingham Museum of Art holds in its collection many photographs documenting the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the incredible leadership and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King once wrote that “the guiding light of our technique of nonviolent social change” resided with the teaching and example of Mahatma Gandhi.

In celebration of Gandhi’s birthday, this contest celebrates the connection between Gandhi and Dr. King and their contributions to civil rights across the globe.

  • Mahatma Gandhi ‘s non-violent civil rights activities in India
  • The influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S.
  • The impact of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. on civil rights progress worldwide

Winners will be announced at Gandhi’s Birthday Celebration (Gandhi Jayanti)
at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Sunday, October 8, 2017. We encourage all entrants to attend the event.
