Sand Mandala Opening Ceremony

April 2 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

/ Free

Event Navigation

Lama Tenzin Deshek, director of the Losel Maitri Buddhist Center in Birmingham, will spend two weeks creating a sand mandala in the BMA lobby. Mandalas are often the focus of meditation and used as a tool to guide the devotee into a deeper understanding of the universe and their place within it. Lama Deshek has chosen the Chenrezig mandala, a multi-colored geometric pattern representing the Buddha of Compassion. It reveals how peace, harmony, and positive change can be achieved through compassion, emptiness, and meditation. In the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the mandala is destroyed at the end of its creation to reiterate the concept that nothing is permanent.
