Event Navigation

The Museum is partnering once again with Art Papers to present Art Papers Live. During this event, What the Body Can Say, we will host a conversation between Natasha Trethewey and Bethany Collins, moderated by Ivy Wilson.

Bethany Collins is the inaugural artist in lobby projects, a new initiative by the Birmingham Museum of Art, opening in April 2016, that commissions site-specific works by established and emerging contemporary artists. Collins’ work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at venues throughout the United States, including the Studio Museum in Harlem, the High Museum of Art, and the Flint Institute of Arts. Natasha Trethewey  is a Pulitzer prize-winning poet who served two terms as the 19th Poet Laureate of the United States from 2012–2014. She is the author of four acclaimed collections of poetry, including her acclaimed Bellocq’s Ophelia. She is currently the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory University. Ivy Wilson is Associate Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Northwestern University. He teaches courses on the comparative literatures of the black diaspora and U.S. literary studies with a particular emphasis on African American culture.

Coffee and donuts will be served during the event.
