Several hundred prints and drawings make up the European old master and nineteenth-century works on paper collection. This small, but increasingly fine group was initiated with early gifts, such as the collection of Oscar Wells, a prominent Birmingham banker, who assembled an excellent group of etchings and engravings by Rembrandt and other artists working during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Acquired in 1991, the Eugenia Woodward Hitt Collection enhanced the Museum with several dozen eighteenth-century French drawings. The Museum continues to actively build its European works on paper holdings, and will eventually create a study room to provide easier access to the collection. With this in mind, in 2009 the Museum purchased the Artemis Library of prints and drawings reference materials, which makes Birmingham the primary destination for prints and drawings research in the southeast.
