7 Things to See and Do at Art On The Rocks

/ Art On The Rocks

Can you believe it’s already time for the last Art On The Rocks of the year? This season, Birmingham’s favorite summer series brought opera to the galleries, breakdancing to the cafe, and magic to the Museum. Guests were entertained by Bollywood-style dancing, live body art installations, and performances by The Burning Peppermints and The Underhill Family Orchestra, to name a few. It has been a dynamic summer for Art On The Rocks, and August’s event is sure to be the same. Here are seven things you definitely don’t want to miss.

Los Colognes: Are you ready to be swept into the waves? This Nashville-based band will perform songs from their newest album The Wave and will take audiences down soulful musical paths. With a foundation in rock’n’roll, Los Colognes blends their music with folk and blues sounds, creating quite a journey for their Art On The Rocks audience.

AROVA Contemporary Ballet: There’s no better place for an AROVA Contemporary Ballet performance than the BMA! As a group of artists, AROVA dancers express emotion poignantly through dance and will create elegant appearances throughout the night. Inspired by the art around them, their movement will move you.

Sidewalk Film Festival: Live performers are not the only skilled artists that will take the stage at Art On The Rocks. Escape the crowd for a moment for a sneak peak at Sidewalk Film Festival with short films by Jonathan Napolitano and Becky Beamer. Both films share themes that can be found in the BMA’s Third Space exhibition, so venture upstairs to the gallery after you catch a flick.

Natural Henna Tattoos: Henna artists The Gypsy Leaf and Whimmmsy will create Middle Eastern-inspired patterns that are always an Art On The Rocks fan favorite! Become a part of the art at the Museum with beautiful designs to wear.

The Cakerie: Combining cake artistry with the intricate designs and themes of contemporary art, culinary artists Lexi and Anna from The Cakerie will each make a cake inspired by Third Space. Take a trip upstairs and vote for your favorite cake that embodies interpretation of the art from these lovely Birmingham bakers!

Dreamgirls: The Dreamgirls are returning to the Magic City, and their voices are as beautiful as ever! Don’t miss the Red Mountain Theatre Company’s talented performers belt out a few hits from the award-winning musical. Beyoncé, is that you?

New Art Up: There’s something new to see in Third Space! If you visited the exhibition at the last Art On The Rocks, things will look a little different this time around. Learn more about the recent rotation here.
