2016 Family Festival Recap

/ Kids and Families - Programs - Slideshows

The BMA had a great time during our 2016 family festivals! We hold four family festivals every year, and each one is packed with exciting activities for all ages. Over 3,600 people attended our family festivals this year, and we are looking forward to having even more in 2017.

In March we celebrated Holi, the Hindu festival of colors. Visitors were treated to numerous performances, including classical Indian and Bollywood style dancing, art projects, music, food, and gallery exploration. The festival ended with a huge celebration outside for the throwing of colors, a traditional part of Holi celebrations. The BMA’s seventh Annual Holi Festival will be on March 11, 2017, so mark your calendars!

Another highlight of 2016 was our first Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival. Hispanic Heritage Month is held from September 15th to October 15th each year, and we were excited to bring the celebration to the BMA for the first time. The event featured a local dance company leading a salsa and bachata workshop in our cafe, special art activities highlighting our Pre-Columbian works, and our first Spanish language tours led by local community leaders. Hispanic Heritage Festival was a huge hit and we look forward to hosting it again next year.

We also partnered with the Central Alabama Caribbean-American Organization (CACAO) for the fifth Annual Caribbean Festival in Linn Park last summer, and held a Harvest Festival in the fall. Both events were a great way to connect with the Birmingham community while celebrating the many cultures represented in our collection. And best of all, the BMA’s family festivals are always free. We hope you’ll join us next year!

The 2016–2017 Family Festivals Series is presented by Medical Properties Trust.
